Hush a bye baby rhyme

Hus-a-bye baby rhyme is said to have originated from America. It was the practice of some Native Americans to place a baby in the branches of a tree allowing the wind to gently rock the child to sleep. Hush a bye baby, on the tree top, When the wind blows the cradle will rock; When the bow breaks, the cradle will fall, And down will come baby, cradle and all. You may imagine how the cradle rocks with the wind, and it's so sweet. But I met another version of the this nursery rhyme or lullaby in the book "Workhouse" by Simon Fowler (National Archives, P. 198), the verse was from Yorkshire: Hush-a-bye baby, on the tree top, When you grow old, your wages will stop, When you have spent the little you made, First to the Poorhouse and then to the grave. It seems quite offensive to sing to a baby, but it was the damn reality. A japanese Buddhist monk Sengai was invited to the birthday celebration of a rich man. The rich man asked Sengai to write something for th...

Shyness is a kind of protective mechanism

Your child's shyness might let you down when you try to show off. But in many situations and at certain ages such shyness can be a protective mechanism, when she faces strangers. Some children will try to stay close to their mum or even hide behind her. This is a perfectly healthy and natural protective behaviour.

Safest, cheapest method to treat head lice

Head lice, are parasitic insects that feed on human blod and cause severe itching of the head. Pediculosis is the general term used for infestation of the body or hair with adult lice, lavae and nits (eggs). Head lice are relatively common and are not a major health hazard. Many chemical treatments are available however, the safest, cheapest and currently the most popular method of treatment is by Mechanical Removal. Mechanically removing lice and nits by combing is the most effective method of removing the adult louse, thereby breaking the cycle. Using a nit comb through hair which has had conditioner applied will help lubricate the hair to ease combing. Clean the comb frequently to remove any caught Lice or eggs by dipping in a bowl of warm water containing a small amount of baby oil. There are several new lotions on the market which have proved to be effective. Please ask you local Pharmacy for advice. These can be quite expensive, some GP's will write prescriptions for he...

Petticoats, breeches and Pinafore

One of the milestones that a little boy passed at the age of four or five was the transition from baby clothes or petticoats to trouser or breeches. He would still wear a pinafore to protect his clothes, but he was expected to be able to dress himself and tie the strings of his pinafore in a bow, at the back.

What can this be in a foggy forest?

A little elf all by himself. Three bears in picnic chairs. A fairy queen on a trampoline. A unicorn blowing a horn. Goldilocks with a box of chocs. A witch on a broom, with an engine -vroom, vroom. An ogre doing yoga. Cinderella and Snow White in a water pistol fight. Little Red Riding Hood and her Gran selling ice creams from their van. Hooray! A Travelling Fair!

Dora goes to the Doctor

Today my mami is taking me for a checkup at the doctor's surgery. We have to go to the bus stop to catch the number four bus which will take us to the doctor's surgery. Then we go to the waiting room where the nurse will call us into the examination room for my checkup. The bus took us to the doctor's surgery, but the door to the waiting room is closed. I press the buzzer. Nurse pilar opened the door to waiting room. Nurse Pilar says that Dr Lopez will be ready for us in a few minutes. There are lots of books and toys in the waiting room. The puzzle on the floor is a picture of the human body. But the heart of it is missing. The Nurse Pilar called my name and we can go into the examination room for my checkup. The first thing Nurse Pilar does is weigh and measure me to see how much I've grown. Then she takes my temperature by putting a thermometer in my mouth. Nurse Pilar says my temperature is just right. Now it's time for Dr. Lopez to come in and exami...
